Donna’s Story
My husband was 64, an avid mountain hiker, we live in Aspen, CO. He was diagnosed with a PSA of 8.2, 3 cores were cancerous.
A friend told us about HIFU, which is ultrasound on high frequency, it cooks the cancerous tissue, goes right through soft tissue without any damage. We found out that HIFU was offered all around the globe and had been for 20+ years, but in the USA it was only in clinical trials.
We tried to enter the clinical trials, but his gland was 2cc too large so we learned of doctors who leave the country to treat men using HIFU. These doctors are doing their own data keeping and pioneering the advancement of HIFU. I chose the doctor who had been doing it the longest, he flies to Puerto Vallarta every month to treat men.
My husband’s treatment was only 2 hours while he was sedated in a wonderful perfect hospital. Then we were taken back to our hotel, we went for a walk downtown and had dinner, he kept remarking how he thought he would feel some pain, but he felt as though nothing had been done to him. He had a catheter in, which he wore for 2 weeks, it was a bother, but no pain and a small price to pay for cancer treatment.
HIFU should be offered to men as a choice of treatments as it is well known the possible side effects are quite small compared to surgery or radiation.
My husband is cancer free today after his Dec. 2008 treatment and he never had any side effects (although he did need 5mg for Cialis for a couple months to keep the blood vessels open). We have sent in 4 friends since and we know of several others who were treated prior to my husband, all are thrilled that they found HIFU.
The only way to hear of this treatment is through word of mouth, so I try…
